The aim of the project was to apply the tools and concepts provided by industrial ecology under a sustainable development framework to explore the current issues in the waste management systems at SRS. A systemic approach and focus on stocks and flows of materials and energy provided by IE using tools such as the Material Flow Analysis (MFA) was adapted. It also aims to examine new possibilities for improvement in the present waste system at the SRS by comparing environmental sustainability indicators with other successful cases on waste management in urban districts across the world. The project then assesses future challenges and proposes different suggestions for improvements in the waste management system in the SRS.
